LASIK: The Thrilling Conclusion!

October 5, 2011

Six weeks ago I underwent LASIK surgery in an attempt to turn my feeble glasses-wearing human eyes into those of an eagle. The decision was made with mild trepidation, upgraded to moderate apprehension when an unusually large earthquake hit the East Coast hours before the surgery, and then reduced back down to mild trepidation when I was told the lasers would automatically shut off if an aftershock were to occur during surgery.

After an evaluation the day before that included eye topography scans and corneal thickness measurements, the surgery itself was quick. In 10 minutes, they cut flaps in my corneas, burned off some cornea to reshape my eyes, and put the flaps back into position. When I sat up, I could immediately see more clearly than I had since I was a child. After a few minutes, the anesthetic wore off and I experienced some irritation, almost like there was sand in my eyes. My eyes felt significantly better the next morning during a follow-up exam, although my vision still felt hazy and I wouldn’t say I was comfortable. To my surprise though, I could easily read the 20/15 line on the chart with both eyes!

The haziness and eye dryness I first experienced has gradually reduced over the last six weeks, and I expect those symptoms to disappear completely within the next few months as my eyes continue to heal. When I returned for a follow-up appointment last week, my eyes were still 20/15. To go from 20/350 to 20/15 with a few pulses from a laser is nothing short of incredible. I never thought of my need for glasses or contacts as a disability while I used them, but now that I don’t, I know they were. And while I can’t see quite as well as an eagle, being able to see better than most humans is priceless.
