Photo of the Week #105

November 14, 2011

With few exceptions, my Photo of the Week is just that, a single photo, but capturing the immense tap, jazz, ballet and modern dance talent of the Radio City Rockettes requires me to bend the rules this week. So, I present you with five images from this year’s Radio City Christmas Spectacular combined into one (174 Rockettes in all). From top to bottom, the numbers are: Sleigh Ride, The Twelve Days of Christmas, The Parade of Wooden Soldiers, Santa’s Video Game, and New York at Christmas. I see at least part of the show every year through my job as a photographer and I can’t get enough of it, especially The Twelve Days of Christmas, a nearly 8-minute synchronized tap number. If you grew up with an appreciation for tap like I did by watching Gregory Hines on Square One, you’ll want to check it out (extra credit to anyone who can find that video online and post a link in the comments below!). The Christmas Spectacular runs here in New York City through January 2, 2012.

Photo tech specs (all with Canon 1Ds Mark II camera @ ISO 400):

  1. 24-70mm f2.8 lens @ 64mm, f4, 1/250th
  2. 24-70mm f2.8 lens @ 70mm, f4, 1/500th
  3. 24-70mm f2.8 lens @ 66mm, f4, 1/250th
  4. 70-200mm f2.8 II lens @ 70mm, f3.2, 1/250th
  5. 24-70mm f2.8 lens @ 58mm, f4, 1/500th
