Photo of the Week #107

November 28, 2011

With hockey season well underway, it’s time to feature the sport in a Photo of the Week. I shot the New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers NHL game on Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, but my favorite photo actually came in the college game that evening at the same venue, when Boston University defeated Cornell in overtime in the biennial Red Hot Hockey game. Even with the high-speed motor drives in today’s cameras, it’s challenging for me to get shots like this because I use a strobe lighting system which allows me to only take one shot at a time. The benefit of lighting the arena this way is that it provides crisp, clear images, but I have to wait 4 seconds between photos to allow the strobes to refresh. When a player’s skates leave the ice, there’s only one chance to get the shot. You can see a full gallery of images from Saturday’s hockey games in yesterday’s blog post.

Photo tech specs: Canon 7D camera, 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 lens @ 300mm (480mm equivalent), f8, 1/400th, ISO 320.
