The Year in Review: Top 13 Photos of ’13
With 2013 coming to a close, it’s time once again to select my favorites from the tens of thousands of photos I’ve taken over the past year. As usual, it’s a mix of sports, entertainment, portraits and travel images. Enjoy!
January 8, 2013: New York Knicks Carmelo Anthony and Jason Kidd share a laugh with teammates in the green room before addressing season ticket holders at a special event in downtown Manhattan. — ©MSG
A lot sure has changed since this playful photo was taken last season in which the Knicks went 54-28, won their division and their first playoff series since 2000, and Carmelo Anthony was crowned NBA scoring leader with 28.7 points per game. While Anthony is still putting up strong numbers, the team is third-worst in the league with an abysmal 9-21 record. And Jason Kidd? After playing for the Knicks in the final season of his 19-year career, he signed on as head coach of New York City’s other NBA team, the Brooklyn Nets, who sport an equally miserable 10-20 record. There’s nothing quite like shooting a big arena concert. More photos of this show on MSGSoundCheck.com. [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 400mm f2.8 IS lens @ f2.8, 1/2000th, ISO 2500.]
April 1, 2013: Evan Harrington (“Alf”) from the New York production of Peter and the Starcatcher promotes the show’s upcoming San Francisco run.
This was a fun shoot I did for SHN, San Francisco’s pre-eminent theatrical entertainment company. To help publicize shows with upcoming runs in the Bay Area, they sent me backstage to get shots of the shows’ New York City casts, including this one of Evan Harrington (“Alf”) from Peter and the Starcatcher. With the help of an assistant and very portable softbox lighting, I took the photo backstage against a white wall minutes before the curtain rose. The excitement is palpable in this one and I love the 3D effect of the out-of-focus players in the foreground. If I could get a shot like this at every basketball game, I’d be a very happy photographer. [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 70-200mm f2.8 IS II lens @ 200mm, f3.2, 1/1250th, ISO 2500.]

I’ve shot the Garden of Dreams Foundation’s annual talent show since 2007, and each year it gets bigger and more spectacular. But my favorite moments are intimate ones like these, when a young singer experiences the spotlight of Radio City Music Hall for the first time at a rehearsal. Gee, think he was happy to win this fight? [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 24-70mm f2.8 II lens @ 24mm, f2.8, 1/1600th, ISO 5000.]
August 10, 2013: A father plays with his son on the beach in the Hamptons.
Everything came together perfectly for this image: the warm sunset light, crashing waves, and playful expressions and body language of the father and son as they played together on the beach. I was glad to be able to freeze this moment in time for them. [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 24-70mm f2.8 II lens @ 24mm, f6.3, 1/200th, ISO 100, lit with Einstein 640 strobe in 35″ octabox.]

The beautiful and talented Rockettes, a fixture at Radio City Music Hall since 1932, are personal favorites of mine because their charm, grace and timeless costumes make my job oh so easy. All it takes is a bit of technical know-how (in this case, several heavily filtered flashes to match the room’s very yellow lighting) and voila!, a classic image of the women in one of Radio City Music Hall’s iconic lounges. For more of my Rockettes photos from this shoot and others, check out the gallery on NJ.com. [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 24-70mm f2.8 II lens @ 61mm, f3.2, 1/100th, ISO 1600, lit with four 550EX flashes bounced off ceiling, heavily filtered to match ambient color temperature.]
August 27, 2013: A praying mantis lounges by a swimming pool in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Likely my smallest, greenest and most bug-eyed portrait subject of the year, this tiny critter stood patiently long enough for me to get this single shot before scampering away. Thanks lil’ buddy! September 3, 2013: The Las Vegas Strip at sunrise.
It was definitely worth rolling out of bed and fumbling around with photo equipment at the crack of dawn to get this shot. [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 24-70 f2.8 II lens @ 24mm, f4, 1/50th, ISO 100.]

This photo appeared in The New York Times along with another from the same shoot. They weren’t my first photos in the Times, but it’s always rewarding to have a byline in such a major publication! [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 24-70mm f2.8 II lens @ 24mm, f2.8, 1/500th, ISO 10000.]
October 21, 2013: Judah frolics in the fall foliage of New England’s Berkshire Mountains.
For this glowing image of my son Judah, I used a similar lighting technique to that of the father and son in the Hamptons (#7, above). Something magical happens when the sun is behind the subject and you fill in the shadows with the light from a large softbox. Of course, a willing model helps too! [Canon 5D Mark III camera, 24-70mm f2.8 II lens @ 50mm, f3.5, 1/200th, ISO 100, lit with Einstein 640 strobe in 35″ octabox.]

It wouldn’t be another Year in Review blog post without at least one photo of the Rangers, a team whose games I’ve been shooting since 2004. Although they’ve been struggling a bit this season, there have been some great moments like this one, a goal celebration in their win over perennial Stanley Cup contender Pittsburgh Penguins.
