Photo of the Week #218
I think you’ll agree this image from California ranks right up there with #206 as one of my least “New York” Photos of the Week ever. We don’t see many stars in the bright lights of New York City, so I couldn’t help but get a warm tingly feeling as I stood in the crisp night air, transfixed on this spectacular scene at Lassen Volcanic National Park. I would have stared all night at the Milky Way and starry night sky reflecting off glassy Manzanita Lake were it not for the prospect of becoming bear food. I was prepared to use my tripod as a weapon as I walked back to my cabin through the woods under the dark, moonless sky, but luckily the only furry creature I encountered was a bunny.
Photo tech specs: Canon 5D Mark III camera, Rokinon 14mm f2.8 lens @ f2.8, 30 seconds, ISO 12800.
August 30, 2014: Starry night sky over Manzanita Lake at Lassen Volcanic National Park, California.

Definitely not what I’d expect from NY but stunning photograph :) Always great to see stars in a large city!
Thanks Manal! I guess I should have clarified for people outside the U.S., California (where this photo was taken) is thousands of kilometers away from New York City. Although I’m sure I wouldn’t have to travel that far to see dark skies :)
Ah thanks for the clarification. Thought it was taken in NYC. I find it difficult to get any decent star shots in London, assuming NYC is the same.
Yeah, I don’t even bother unless I’m 100+ km outside the city.
This is so lovely! Makes me want to venture out of the city and study the sky all night!
the photo is hypnotized me, so wonderfull!
Cheers from Indonesia
