Photo of the Week #246
I took this photo from the rooftop of New York City’s Hudson Hotel while covering an event for Better Homes and Gardens magazine last Thursday evening. Even though it doesn’t showcase any iconic NYC landmarks to speak of (is that the Empire State Building I see peeking out of the middle of the photo?), the image still feels very New York to me. Why? Maybe it’s 9th Avenue, straight as an arrow, shooting off into the distance? And that enormous 1920’s era apartment building in the foreground?
On a technical note, I used a fisheye lens to get this expansive view and corrected the distortion using Image Trends’ Fisheye-Hemi plug-in for Photoshop. It’s a very simple and old plug-in, but it really does the trick when even my 14mm lens isn’t wide enough.
Photo tech specs: Canon 5D Mark III camera, 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens @ f3.5, 1/15th, ISO 1600.
September 17, 2015: Manhattan at dusk.
